About Me (Ashley)
Zista is a Sanskrit word, meaning cultured. Although I am 4th generation Australian, my Indian (Sikh) culture has always played an important part in my life. My Great Grandfather, Baba Ram Singh Rai (pictured), was one of the first Sikhs to arrive in Australia around 1890. He was also one of the first to bring the Sikh Holy Book to Australia. He passed away aged 108, playing an instrumental role in helping Sikhs build their lives in Australia and ensuring our Sikh heritage stayed alive!
Growing up was a tug-of-war of love for me towards my culture. There were times were there was much love and appreciation, particularly for the strong community spirit. On the other hand there were times I found hard, where strict rules and guidelines meant life was different from those around me.
Fast forward to now, having experienced university life, corporate life, friendships, traveling, marriage and now kids, I’ve learnt what being apart of this unique culture is all about. India has a rich vibrant culture, like no other! From our big fat weddings, exquisite architecture, crazy traditions and huge communities, it is a unique and magical experience.
Why I started Zista
Over the past few years however, I’ve realised ‘Made In India’ does not receive the value and love that it deserves.
I knew I needed to change this preconception and create a brand that celebrates and integrates the intricate fashion traditions of India! Zista is an online boutique bringing together timeless pieces that will immerse you into the exquisite cultures of India. Every design is crafted and made slowly by an experienced Artisan. All pieces are made ethically and using only pure materials.
I’m excited that Zista lets me continue my Great Grandfather’s passion and commitment for sharing our Indian culture within Australia, but in a new and modern way.
